Description:
Known for their intelligence and loyalty American Pit Bull Terriers make excellent, loving and protective companions despite the unfair press they receive. A common question regarding the APBT is, "How is this breed different from the American Staffordshire Terrier?". In the eyes of the United Kennel Club, they are the same breed, but many disagree. Some AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terriers are dual-registered as American Pit Bull Terriers with the UKC; however, this draws criticism from many who point out that the bloodlines have been separate for too long for these to be considered the same breed. The AKC, on the other hand, does not allow a UKC-registered American Pit Bull Terrier to be registered as an American Staffordshire Terrier. To be dual-registered, the dog must first be an AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terrier and then it can be registered with the UKC as an APBT -- but not vice versa... Choose from a responsible breeder and make sure the puppy is properly socialized and handled. Solid training will produce a tranquil, good, obedient, companion dog.

Pit Bulls have as much personality as any other dog breed. Each has characteristics normal to the breed, and characteristics totally their own. When selecting a dog, there is nothing as important as the temperament of the animal. This is determined by a combination of genetics and environmental factors. How a dog reacts as a puppy will be different from how the same dog reacts as an adult. If this is a dog you’ve raised, it should take its lead from you and learn how you think it should act. If it was raised by others, or was a rescue dog, this can be a problem.
The dog should be calm, not startling more than normal when faced with a surprise or loud noise. A Pit Bull with good nerves may well be startled and cautious around strange situations or loud noises, but should quickly investigate the situation. Pit Bulls are known for courage and bravery.
A good dog should be submissive, but not shy or cringing. The dog should be willing to accept you as the Alpha, without feeling a need to dispute that role. Note that this means the dog will expect you to do the fighting, as that is the Alpha’s job. The dog won’t feel a need to join in normally should a fight occur. The dog should be friendly towards people, even seeking fun and games from strangers. Fear of strangers is a good sign for an improperly socialized dog or one that has been abused. Pit Bulls should naturally like people; this is normal for the breed.
Pit Bulls are normally aggressive, and this is only to be expected. This does not mean you should accept a vicious or dangerous animal, and a good Pit Bull will know how far it can go without upsetting you, and won’t attempt to cross that line. There is a difference between an attempt to show dominance over another dog and dangerous aggression. Despite the stories and myths, Pit Bulls are not normally aggressive towards humans. This is abnormal behavior in a breed that is naturally friendly, and should always send up a red flag immediately. While Pit Bulls were bred as fighting dogs, this was to fight against other animals, and dogs biting humans, especially their handlers, were put to death. This has resulted in a breed that is aggressive, but loves people, since those characteristics were selected for encouragement.
A desirable dog is intelligent and is capable of learning tricks and behaviors, even when not intended. I had a dog I would play with through my backdoor, who learned that the phone ringing was a signal I’d go away for a while. Pit Bulls are normally energetic dogs, and owners should prepare for daily walks. It is very easy to teach a Pit Bull that his job in life is to ensure you get your daily walk, no matter the weather or how you might feel about it.

Regular brushing with a bristle brush or rubbing down his coat with a chamois will keep the coat shiny and clean. Bath only when necessary. Needs a substantial amount of vigorous exercise which needs to be on-leash. Enjoys running along side a bicycle.
Health Issues:
Mange and heart murmurs. Breeders should be concerned with doing health testing on the sire or dam such as OFA, PENN HIP
